Living in the "sticks" as I like to say is challenging at best this time of year. Marianne Binetti, a Pacific NW garden guru, says we must get rid of as many weeds as possible before they go to seed. If they go to seed then all "hell" breaks lose and the fight turns into a war of us against the nasty weeds.
Well, Marianne, I am trying to irradicate the weeds. However, they like us so much each little green flowery obnoxious one of them just keeps coming back. I weed for exercise daily when the rain lets me. I go around with my 5 gallon bucket, my hand rake thingy, my trusty gloves and wack, dig and pull away. I go back out in a day or so and guess what: their relatives have taken their place. But I believe Marianne so I don't give up.
I really love walking around our property even though I see work at every glance. I love the woodsy feeling I grew up with even though the landscape was totally different. I also love learning new ways of doing things.
One new thing I learned just yesterday was that some of the weeds are not only edible, but incredibly good for you. I have Purlsane in my beds in several places.
It is a nice enough looking plant and since it is a succulent I just let it spread and get rid of some more obnoxious weeds out there. And little did I know that it has some great nutritional benefits. Go figure! Live and Learn they say.
According to the guy on NPR, a person can eat healthy for fee by just collecting the right plants from the outdoors. Now I personally like to plant a garden with normal vegetable plants, but this idea is intriguing. We don't have any toxic chemicals sprayed around (or not many at least) so they plants should be safe.
Mint grows underground and just spreads like wildfire. it certainly has some healthy and tasty uses. Click on the Purlsane and read for yourself how us hippies forage for weeds to supplement our diets!
In the meantime, if you have a nice piece of property like we do, you can now be thankful for some of the weeding and some of the weeds. You get exercise, absorb some Vitamin D if the sun comes out, and you can enjoy a very simple pleasure that only comes from hard work and the resulting "fruits" of your labor!
Weed on, plant and reap the harvest.
